Throughout the pregnancy we have tried to get the boys involved in what’s happening with me and the baby each week so they can understand and accept that we will soon have a new baby. I have been slightly worried about how they will be when the new baby arrives, it is going to be a big change for all of us and the youngest will now not be the youngest. They are really excited that they will soon have a little sister and I want to keep them involved and make sure that they don’t feel pushed out when she comes along. Now the boys are 7 & 8 they are more aware of what is going on and it’s really important to include them.
We decided that it would be a good idea for the boys to get a present for the new baby when she arrives, after much thinking we decided that if they made her a build a bear they could write a little note each to put inside the teddy. This would be in her cot and it would always be special to her.
On Sunday the boys sat down and they both wrote a little note to put inside the bear, saying how they are looking forward to meeting her and that they love her.
Then we went to the Build a Bear shop and they picked a lovely pink soft teddy that they thought she would like. The staff were fantastic and the boys said how they were making the teddy to give to their little sister when she was born. They each put a little heart inside the teddy that they held against their hearts first, gave it a kiss and made a wish. Then they were able to put their notes inside the teddy too. I really like Build a Bear as the staff make every visit so special for the kids and the boys love going there as a special treat.
After they had made the teddy we made her birth certificate and called her Rose as it looked like her fur was little roses. Now she is waiting in her box patiently until baby arrives and the boys can give it to her.
Did anyone else get presents for their older children to give to the new arrivals? What ideas did you have?
