On the 9th November it was Ben’s 7th Birthday. This has seemed a little while coming as we had his birthday party 2 weeks ago because he shared it with 3 other friends from his class at school. As such it seems like this birthday has had a bigger build up than any other year, still I have been as unprepared as ever for the actual day!
What to do?
I asked Ben what he wanted for his birthday and he has been going on about having an animal themed bedroom for the last 6 months. This is his favourite topic as he watches a lot of animal documentaries off Netflix and is obsessed with a cartoon called Wild Kratz. I have to say it is an amazing cartoon and I’m learning about animals that I’ve never heard off.
For the last month I’ve been searching everywhere for items to make an animal themed bedroom for him which has been quite a challenge. Everything seemed to be either to babyish and more suitable for a nursery or too realistic and a bit grown up.
Here’s some pictures of his room before the makeover when he was in love with everything to do with London!
This is what I’ve found;
Firstly this amazing light from Ikea, my older son has one in his room and I love the fact it opens and closes depending on how much light you want just by pulling the string at the bottom. Ben was desperate to have the aqua version of this light and I think it looks fab.
I found this great animal print duvet from Debenhams
I like the colours and the fact it’s reversible, Ben thinks it’s awesome and not to young, he loves the camo effect.
I found a fox teddy and a hedgehog door stop in Dunelm’s which were great value for money and the fox goes well with the orange on the duvet cover. Plus Ben is obsessed with soft toys so this was a welcome addition to his teddy collection. I also replaced his very tired looking black out curtains with the Solar range from Dunelm, they are fantastic quality and much better than the old one’s he’d had since he was born.
Now the clever bit and this is where my amazing husband has comes in. I looked and looked online for wall stickers and decal’s and I either found some I liked that were a ridiculous amount of money or I found the perfect stickers on google images and there was nowhere to buy them! My husband works with graphics so he let me loose on the dollar photo website and told me to find images I liked.
I picked a large illustrated zoo scene to go above Ben’s bed. I love the colours and the style of the illustration and think it makes it more age appropriate than picking actual photos of the animals.
There is an African animal scene at the end of the bed which again is an illustration and has sme of my favourite animals in it.
On top of his chest of draws is a peregrine falcon which is his favourite bird and he’s learnt all about this from Wild Kratz.
Lastly, and this is my favourite, monkey’s hanging from a tree. I love the way this curves around the wall.
He was so happy with his new room. He had no idea we were doing it as he had a sleepover in his brother’s room Sunday night as a treat. We also got him a few little bit’s to open that he’d mentioned he would like and I can’t wait play with these with him.
It was a shame he had to go to school on his birthday but he took cake in for his class and said he had a nice day. In the evening we went to Pizza Hut as a birthday treat and it was a lovely way to finish off his birthday.
As for hubby and I, I can’t believe my youngest son is now 7! Firstly I clearly don’t feel old enough for this as in my head I’m still 21. Secondly where has the time gone it seems like only yesterday we were bringing him home from the hospital. I hope time slows down a bit now and I’m going to make sure I treasure every moment.
