It’s been a fun couple of days, a while ago we booked a hotel at Tower Hill so we could get away for a couple of days during the summer holidays. My back hasn’t been great so I was a bit apprehensive about going but planned to take it easy and go at a slower pace.
Hubby got a driving experience at Mercedes Benz world as a birthday present so we decided to do that on Sunday morning on the way into London. It was absolutely fantastic and definitely worth a visit. The experience was for one of the stunt drivers to take him round the track in an AMG, they even let the boys go in the back of the car in booster seats. The three boys all enjoyed themselves and I was very impressed by how family friendly the experience was.
After that we headed into London and parked at Tower Hill. We got on a city river cruise for the afternoon that went between Greenwich and Westminster. This was a really nice relaxing way to do some sight seeing at an easy and hassle free pace. It was nice to see the sights from the river as well and get a different perspective on them. I’d recommend this to anyone with kids or limited mobility, the crew were really friendly and did a fantastic commentary along the river.
On Monday we went to the science museum, the boys love this as it is often quieter than the Natural History Museum and there are plenty of interactive elements to keep them entertained. On Sunday I was on crutches and negotiating the tube and the science museum was a little bit too much for my back. The staff were so helpful and I was able to borrow the rather fantastic carbon fibre wheelchair below. This made it much easier to get around the museum and I was able to enjoy our day out.
Before we came home we did a little trip over to Harrods, well it would have been rude not to. For dinner we took the boys to the ice cream parlour, they now think we are the coolest parents ever, letting them have ice cream for tea!
I did find using the tube was really difficult, stairs, crutches and lots of commuters and tourists in a rush is not a good combination. In the morning the tube was packed and there was nowhere to sit, in hindsight it would have been better for us to get a taxi to the museum. However people were on the whole polite and moved out of my way, allowing me to go through the ticket barrier first.
All in all it was a great trip and nice to have some quality family time away from work and normal household distractions. I was very sore when we got back home and honestly I think this will be the last big day trip away before the baby comes. I’ll have to come up with a list of fun things to do closer to home instead.
